Over 1,300 Pilgrims Die During Hajj in Saudi Arabia Amid 51.8°C Heat; 83% Unauthorized
Jun 24, 2024, 02:42 AM
More than 1,300 pilgrims died during this year's Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, with temperatures soaring to 51.8 degrees Celsius. The extreme heat, combined with inadequate shelter and comfort, particularly affected unauthorized pilgrims, who made up 83% of the fatalities. Many of the deceased were forced to walk long distances under direct sunlight without proper protection. The death toll among Egyptian pilgrims reached 672, while 98 Indians and 11 Iranians were also among the dead. In response, Egypt has revoked the licenses of several Hajj tourism companies, citing poor management and unauthorized pilgrimages. Saudi authorities, including Health Minister Fahd bin Abdurrahman Al-Jalajel, are facing criticism for their handling of the situation, with questions raised about climate resilience and pilgrimage safety. Among the deceased were a Maryland couple, highlighting the global impact on the nearly 2 million participants.
