Google to Buy 500MW from Kairos's Seven Small Nuclear Reactors to Power AI Data Centers

Google has signed the world's first corporate agreement to purchase power from small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs), partnering with nuclear-energy startup Kairos Power to support the construction of seven SMRs in the United States. Under the deal, Google will buy the power generated by these reactors, aiming to add 500 megawatts of carbon-free energy to the grid by 2030-2035. This initiative is designed to meet the surging power demands of Google's data centers, particularly for artificial intelligence operations, and to support AI investments. The reactors include Kairos Power's 50-megawatt Hermes project in Tennessee and other future projects across the U.S. This landmark deal marks a pioneering step in corporate procurement of advanced nuclear energy, as Google becomes the first tech company to order a fleet of SMRs.
