Google to Add 500MW from Seven Nuclear Reactors by 2035 in Deal with Kairos Power
Oct 14, 2024, 08:10 PM
Google has signed a first-of-its-kind deal with nuclear startup Kairos Power to back the construction of seven small modular reactors using molten salt technology in the United States. Under the agreement, Google will purchase power generated by these reactors to meet the increasing energy demands of its data centers, particularly to support artificial intelligence workloads. The plan aims to add 500 megawatts of clean, reliable energy to the grid by 2030-2035, pending approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and local agencies. This marks the world's first corporate agreement to purchase nuclear energy from small modular reactors and the first time a tech company has commissioned new nuclear power plants to provide low-carbon electricity for its data centers.
