LA Wildfires Kill 24; Governor Warns of Potential Historic Disaster
Jan 13, 2025, 02:10 AM
Wildfires continue to devastate the Los Angeles area, with the death toll rising to at least 24, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office. Governor Gavin Newsom warned that these fires could become the most devastating natural disaster in U.S. history. The fires, including the Eaton Fire in Altadena and the Palisades Fire in the city of Los Angeles, have destroyed over 12,000 structures and forced the evacuation of more than 150,000 residents. Over 14,000 emergency personnel have been deployed from nine states to combat the blazes. Firefighters are working diligently to contain the fires before strong winds, expected to return this week, exacerbate the situation. Authorities report that at least 16 people are missing, and the number of fatalities may rise as searches continue.
