VisitPoland Increases Border Forces to 17,000, Allocates 5% GDP to Defense
Jul 13, 2024, 01:53 AM
Poland has announced an increase in military forces on its border with Belarus, raising the number of servicemen to 17,000 from August 1, with 8,000 serving directly on the border, up from 6,000. This move comes amid heightened tensions as Polish officials believe the surge in migrant arrivals through Belarus is part of Russia’s hybrid war tactics against the West. Reports indicate that migrants, armed with makeshift weapons, have attacked Polish border guards, resulting in the death of one guard. In response, Poland's Parliament has passed a new law allowing soldiers, border guards, and police officers to use live ammunition to stop migrants from storming the border, with 401 MPs voting for the law and 17 against. Additionally, Poland plans to allocate 5% of its GDP to defense in 2025, up from 4% this year, marking the highest defense spending in NATO.
