World No.2 Iga Swiatek Accepts One-Month Ban After Positive Test for Trimetazidine
Nov 28, 2024, 03:47 PM
World No.2 tennis player and five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek has accepted a one-month suspension after testing positive for the banned substance trimetazidine (TMZ), a heart medication. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed that Swiatek tested positive in an out-of-competition sample collected in August 2024. The investigation determined that the positive test resulted from the unintentional contamination of melatonin, which she was taking for jet lag and sleep issues. As a result, the ITIA ruled that Swiatek bore no significant fault or negligence. She was provisionally suspended from September 12 to October 4 and missed three tournaments during that period. The WTA acknowledged the decision by the ITIA. Swiatek described the doping ban as the "worst experience" of her life.
