World No.2 Iga Swiatek Accepts One-Month Ban for Positive Test of Trimetazidine from Contaminated Melatonin
Nov 28, 2024, 03:06 PM
Iga Swiatek, the world No. 2 in women's tennis and five-time Grand Slam champion—including four Roland Garros titles and one US Open win—has accepted a one-month suspension after testing positive for the prohibited substance trimetazidine (TMZ) in an out-of-competition test conducted in August 2024. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) determined that the positive result was due to contaminated melatonin she was taking for jet lag and sleep issues, and concluded that she bore no significant fault or negligence. Swiatek was provisionally suspended from September 12 and missed three tournaments during this period. She described the situation as the 'worst experience' of her life. The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) acknowledged the ITIA's decision and the circumstances leading to the violation.
