Ethics Panel Blocks Release of Misconduct Report on Trump's Attorney General Nominee Matt Gaetz
Nov 20, 2024, 08:59 PM
The House Ethics Committee met on Wednesday but failed to agree on whether to release a report on its investigation into former Representative Matt Gaetz, President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for attorney general, who resigned from Congress last week. Committee Chairman Michael Guest, a Republican from Mississippi, said after the closed-door meeting that there was "no agreement" on releasing the report. According to sources, the committee deadlocked along partisan lines, with Republicans voting against releasing the report and Democrats pushing for its publication. The 10-member bipartisan panel, evenly split between Republicans and Democrats, had been investigating allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use involving Gaetz. Rep. Susan Wild, the ranking Democrat on the committee, expressed frustration over the lack of agreement and threatened to call for a House vote to release the report. The committee plans to complete the report and meet again in December. The decision not to release the findings has intensified calls for transparency as Gaetz prepares for Senate confirmation hearings.
