Croatia's Milanović Wins Second Term in Landslide, Defeats Ruling Party's Primorac
Jan 12, 2025, 05:30 PM
Croatia's incumbent President Zoran Milanović has secured a decisive victory in the presidential runoff election held on January 12, 2025, according to exit polls. Milanović, backed by the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP-S&D), is projected to win 77.86% of the vote, defeating his rival Dragan Primorac of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ-EPP), who is projected to receive 22.14%. This landslide victory secures Milanović a second term and, if confirmed, would mark the highest margin of victory in Croatia's presidential election history. The first round of voting saw Milanović leading with 49.09% and Primorac with 19.35%. Approximately 3.8 million eligible voters were invited to cast their ballots at 6,755 polling stations across the country. Voter turnout was reported at 13.80% by 11:30 AM CET and 34.77% by 4:30 PM CET, indicating lower participation compared to previous elections. Official results are expected later in the evening, with the State Election Commission (DIP) overseeing the count.
