Cleaner Shipping Fuel Accelerates Global Warming, 80% of Warming Since 2020
May 31, 2024, 02:49 AM
A new study has revealed that the reduction in ship pollution, due to cleaner shipping fuel, has inadvertently accelerated global warming. The study estimates that 80% of the warming since 2020 can be attributed to cleaner air. The decrease in pollution particles has significantly increased the amount of heat being trapped at the Earth's surface. This phenomenon has been described as a 'termination shock' and likened to an inadvertent geoengineering experiment. The global sulphur cap, intended to reduce pollution, has thus contributed to the climate crisis. The Guardian reported on this on May 30, with additional details emerging on May 31.
