German Authorities Secure Drifting Tanker 'Eventin' Off Rügen, Carrying 99,000 Tonnes of Oil
Jan 11, 2025, 02:29 AM
An unmaneuverable Panama-flagged oil tanker, the 274-meter-long Eventin, carrying 99,000 tonnes of oil, is drifting off the German island of Rügen in the Baltic Sea after experiencing a power failure. The tanker loaded its cargo at Russia's Ust-Luga port and was en route to Egypt when it became disabled in a Baltic storm. German authorities have secured the vessel and are towing it eastwards to prevent a potential environmental disaster. The tanker is reported to be part of Russia's 'shadow fleet', used to circumvent sanctions. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock accused Russia of endangering European security by "cynically using a fleet of rusty tankers." Environmental organization Greenpeace considers the Eventin one of the 192 most dangerous oil tankers.
