Right-Wing AfD Becomes Second Strongest Party in Germany in EU Elections
Jun 9, 2024, 06:56 PM
The right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) has emerged as the second strongest party in Germany, according to exit polls from the European elections. The AfD, which is opposed to immigration and the EU, outperformed all three members of Germany's left-wing federal coalition government, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz's socialist party (SPD), the Greens, and the liberal FDP. The center-right CDU/CSU remains the largest party in the European Parliament. This result reflects a significant swing to the right across Europe. The AfD is particularly popular in Eastern Germany and has achieved a historic result.
