Israeli Strikes Kill 36 in Gaza, Including Police Chief and Children in Humanitarian Zone
Jan 2, 2025, 08:10 AM
Israeli airstrikes on Gaza have killed at least 36 Palestinians over the past 24 hours, including the Gaza police chief Mahmoud Salah and his deputy Hussam Shahwan. The strikes targeted locations across the Gaza Strip, including a tent encampment in Khan Younis designated as a humanitarian zone, where at least 11 people, among them women, children, and three brothers sleeping side by side, were killed. Airstrikes also hit Jabalia al-Nazla in northern Gaza, killing at least 10 people, and the Maghazi camp in central Gaza, where 8 people died. An airstrike on the Ministry of Interior building in Khan Younis resulted in further casualties. The Israeli military stated that it targeted Hamas command centers operating from civilian areas. The ongoing conflict, now entering 2025, has exacerbated the dire conditions for displaced Palestinians, who are enduring harsh winter weather, freezing temperatures, and heavy rains in makeshift shelters.
