The United States has completed a $9 billion upgrade of the B61-12 nuclear warhead, marking a crucial milestone in its nuclear arsenal modernization efforts. Pantex, the facility responsible for the project, announced the completion of the last production unit modification of the B61-12, concluding nearly a decade of work aimed at extending the life of this critical system. This upgrade comes after approximately 17 years of design and development, as confirmed by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Additionally, the B-52 bomber has received an update with improved engines that will extend its operational lifespan.
