Plane Crashes into Gramado Buildings Amid Fog, Killing 10, Injuring 17
Dec 22, 2024, 03:48 PM
A small plane en route to Florianópolis crashed into the center of the tourist city of Gramado, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, on Sunday morning, December 22, 2024, killing all 10 people on board. The aircraft took off from the Aeroclube de Canela at around 9:10 a.m. amid heavy fog and crashed shortly after, striking several buildings along Avenida das Hortênsias, which connects Gramado to Canela. The plane collided with the chimney of a building, the second floor of a house, and then crashed into a furniture store that was closed at the time. The impact caused an explosion and fire, resulting in at least 17 people on the ground being injured and taken to local hospitals. The Governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, confirmed that there were no survivors among the plane's occupants, who were from São Paulo and had been visiting the region during the busy holiday season. President Lula expressed his condolences to the victims' families and stated that federal authorities are ready to assist with the investigation and support efforts. The Brazilian Air Force has initiated an investigation into the cause of the crash.
