Ukraine Seeks Damages for Russia's June 2023 Destruction of Kakhovka HPP Dam
Jun 6, 2024, 10:36 AM
On June 6, 2023, explosives destroyed the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Dam in southern Ukraine, causing extensive flooding and significant damage. The blast, attributed to Russian forces, resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people, the destruction of hundreds of towns, and the loss of electricity for 500,000 residents. The event is considered one of the largest man-made disasters of the century. A year later, the long-term consequences are becoming clear through satellite imagery. Ukrhydroenergo, Ukraine's state hydroelectric company, has initiated international arbitration seeking damages from Russia for the destruction caused. The destruction also led to an environmental catastrophe.
