Nov 29, 2024, 01:17 AM
Mexican actress Silvia Pinal, considered the last diva of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, died on Thursday, November 28th, 2024, at the age of 93 following a pulmonary collapse. Pinal had been hospitalized since November 21st due to a urinary tract infection, and her health had deteriorated over the past week. She passed away in Mexico City, surrounded by her family. Born in Guaymas, Sonora, Pinal's illustrious career spanned over six decades, during which she starred in more than 100 films, telenovelas, and television series. She was renowned for her collaborations with Spanish director Luis Buñuel, appearing in acclaimed films such as "Viridiana," "El ángel exterminador," and "Simón del desierto," which brought her international fame and established her as his muse. Considered the matriarch of a respected artistic dynasty, Pinal's children and grandchildren have also become prominent figures in the entertainment industry. She hosted a long-running television program that helped thousands of women across Mexico. Public figures, including President Claudia Sheinbaum and Televisa executive Emilio Azcárraga, expressed their condolences and highlighted Pinal's significant contributions to Mexican culture. Sheinbaum described Pinal as "part of the cultural memory of Mexico." The Senate observed a minute of silence in her honor. Plans for a tribute at the Palacio de Bellas Artes are underway, with a private funeral service to be held for family members.
