EU Imports 12.7 Billion Cubic Meters of Russian Gas, Surpassing US for First Time in Two Years
Sep 2, 2024, 02:08 PM
For the first time in nearly two years, European Union countries have imported more natural gas from Russia than from the United States in a single quarter. According to data from Brussels-based consulting company Bruegel, reported by Die Welt, the EU purchased 12.7 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia between April and June 2024, compared to 12.3 billion cubic meters from the US. This shift in energy sourcing positions Russia as the second-largest gas supplier to the EU, following Norway, and highlights the EU's ongoing challenges in reducing dependency on Russian hydrocarbons despite existing sanctions. Russian gas now comprises 15% of the EU's total imports.
