EU Opens Membership Talks with Ukraine and Moldova, Disburses €1.9 Billion
Jun 27, 2024, 12:29 PM
The European Union has officially opened membership talks with Ukraine and Moldova, marking a significant political milestone amidst the ongoing war with Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed confidence in Ukraine's eventual EU membership, calling it a historic moment. The first intergovernmental conference on Ukraine's accession began in Luxembourg, with key Ukrainian officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanishyna, highlighting the progress Ukraine has made in reforms. The EU also disbursed a €1.9 billion tranche to Ukraine under the Ukraine Facility, part of a larger €50 billion support package. Additionally, Zelensky signed a security agreement with the EU during his visit to Brussels, further solidifying Ukraine's ties with the bloc. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal described the day as marking “a new chapter” in the country’s ties with the EU. Despite the progress, Zelensky emphasized the urgent need for a peace settlement with Russia, citing the high number of casualties and the ongoing strain on the country.
