Over 2,000 Buried Alive in Papua New Guinea Landslide at Kaokalam, Mount Mungalo
May 27, 2024, 08:29 AM
A massive landslide in Papua New Guinea has resulted in a catastrophic loss of life, with estimates indicating that over 2,000 people have been buried alive. The disaster struck the remote village of Yambali in Enga Province early on Friday morning, flattening more than 150 homes and displacing at least 1,000 residents. Initial reports had estimated the death toll at around 670, but the figure has since been revised sharply upwards by the Papua New Guinea National Disaster Center. Rescue efforts have been severely hampered by the treacherous terrain and the remote location of the affected area. The government has formally requested international aid, and several countries, including Australia, India, and China, have pledged support. Additionally, 7,900 people are being evacuated due to the threat of another landslide. The United Nations and other international agencies are mobilizing to provide humanitarian assistance to the affected population. The landslide occurred at approximately 3 a.m. local time, impacting the village of Kaokalam and the area around Mount Mungalo.
