US Completes Trident Pier, First Aid Shipments Begin Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict
May 17, 2024, 06:12 AM
The U.S. military has completed the construction and anchoring of the Trident temporary floating pier off the coast of Gaza to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid. This initiative, costing $320 million, aims to streamline the flow of aid to Palestinian civilians amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. The first aid shipments, including hundreds of tons of supplies, have begun moving ashore via the pier. The UK has also delivered its first aid shipment to Gaza through this new maritime corridor. CENTCOM reports that the pier has the potential to bring in up to 150 trucks of aid a day, enough to feed 11,000 people for a month. Despite the successful implementation of the pier, challenges remain in distributing the aid effectively, with the United Nations and aid groups emphasizing that land routes are still crucial for comprehensive aid delivery.
