Daniel Silveira Rearrested 4 Days After Release for Violating Conditional Terms Following Hospital Visit for Kidney Crisis

Former Brazilian federal deputy Daniel Silveira was arrested again by the Federal Police on Tuesday, December 24, just four days after being released on conditional liberty. The arrest was ordered by Supreme Federal Court (STF) Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who cited Silveira's violation of the terms of his conditional release. Silveira was required to stay at home from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., but he returned home at 2:10 a.m. on Sunday, December 22, after leaving a hospital in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, where he had sought treatment for a kidney crisis. Moraes rejected the defense's argument that Silveira's hospital visit justified the violation, stating that the former deputy used the hospital visit as an alibi and did not have judicial authorization for the trip. Silveira had been previously sentenced to 8 years and 9 months in prison and had violated the terms of his conditional release at least 227 times. His defense claimed he was 'urinando sangue' due to a kidney crisis. Silveira was taken to the José Frederico Marques Public Jail in Benfica, Rio de Janeiro, where he will await a custody hearing.
