HTS-Led Rebels Capture Over 50 Towns, Enter Aleppo in First Major Offensive Since 2020
Nov 29, 2024, 10:18 AM
Syrian rebel forces, led by the militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), have launched a significant surprise offensive against government troops in western Aleppo province, marking their first major advance since 2020. The offensive, named 'Deterring Aggression', was launched on Wednesday from the last opposition enclave in northern Syria. The rebels have reportedly captured over 50 towns and villages, including strategic locations such as Base 46—the largest Syrian regime base in western Aleppo—and the towns of Urm Al-Sughra and Anjara. They have advanced to within 10 kilometers of Aleppo city, with some reports indicating they have entered the city for the first time since 2016. The offensive included car bomb attacks and has resulted in heavy clashes and significant casualties, with reports of over 240 people killed. The Syrian army and its Russian allies have responded with airstrikes against rebel positions. HTS leader Abu Mohammad al-Joulani has been reported to be monitoring the advance.
