On October 11, 2024, Cole Bridges, also known as Cole Gonzales, a 24-year-old U.S. Army soldier, was sentenced in the Southern District of New York to 14 years in prison for attempting to assist the Islamic State (ISIS) in planning deadly attacks on American troops in the Middle East. Bridges pleaded guilty on June 14, 2023, to providing tactical guidance, training materials, and suggestions for attacks, including potential targets in New York City such as the 9/11 Memorial. Despite requesting a maximum sentence of 40 years during his sentencing, the judge, in accordance with the Department of Justice's recommendation, imposed a 14-year prison term.
