China Connects 5-GW Solar Farm in Xinjiang to Grid Amid Global Renewable Energy Shortfall
Jun 4, 2024, 06:50 AM
China has connected the world's largest solar farm to the grid in Xinjiang. The state-owned company's 5-GW, 200,000-acre solar farm in Urumqi will generate about 6.09 billion kWh annually, enough to power Los Angeles. This development comes as the International Energy Agency (IEA) warns that the world is falling short of its goal to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030. Despite this, China accounted for 63% of worldwide newly installed renewable energy last year, installing almost 350 GW of new renewable capacity in 2023, more than half the global total.
