Chargers' Cameron Dicker Hits First Successful Fair Catch Kick Since 1976 with Record 57-Yarder
Dec 20, 2024, 02:39 AM
Cameron Dicker of the Los Angeles Chargers made NFL history by successfully executing a 57-yard fair catch kick during their game against the Denver Broncos, reducing the Broncos' lead to 21-13 at halftime. This is the first successful fair catch kick in the NFL since Ray Wersching of the San Diego Chargers accomplished the feat in 1976, and it is now the longest fair catch kick in league history, surpassing the previous record of 52 yards set by Paul Hornung in 1964. The Chargers are the only team to have made successful fair catch kicks since the AFL-NFL merger. Special teams coordinator Ryan Ficken immediately recognized the rare opportunity and coordinated with head coach Jim Harbaugh and officials to attempt the kick. The fair catch kick was executed with no defensive pressure, making it a unique and seldom-seen play in the NFL.
