Investigators in South Korea have extracted initial data from the cockpit voice recorder of Jeju Air Flight 2216, a Boeing 737-800 that crashed on Sunday, killing 179 people in the country's worst aviation disaster. The plane exploded upon impact. The damaged flight data recorder, deemed unrecoverable for data extraction, will be sent to the United States for analysis, according to South Korea's Deputy Minister for Civil Aviation, Joo Jong-wan. Investigators are focusing on a possible landing gear failure as the cause of the crash.
