Bangladesh Bans Awami League's Student Wing on October 23 Under Anti-Terrorism Act
Oct 24, 2024, 01:47 AM
The interim government of Bangladesh has officially banned the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League party. The ban was enacted under the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2009, citing the organization's involvement in violent attacks on student protests that led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina's government in August. The interim administration, led by Prof. Muhammad Yunus, has also declared the BCL a terrorist organization. This move, announced on October 23, marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Bangladesh, as the BCL has been a prominent pro-Awami League student organization for 76 years.
