Astronomers Capture First Detailed Image of WOH G64, a Red Supergiant 2,000 Times the Sun's Size, 160,000 Light-Years Away
Nov 21, 2024, 02:28 PM
Astronomers have successfully captured the first detailed image of WOH G64, a massive red supergiant star located 160,000 light-years away in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This star, which is approximately 2,000 times the size of the Sun, is surrounded by a cocoon of gas and dust, indicating its impending death. The image was obtained using the Very Large Telescope Interferometer, marking a significant milestone in astrophotography as it is the first close-up picture of a star outside the Milky Way. The findings have been published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.
