Dec 18, 2024, 06:03 AM
Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from international cricket effective immediately, following the third Test against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane, which ended in a draw. The 38-year-old retires as India's second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, having taken 537 wickets in 106 matches and a total of 765 international wickets. He also scored six international centuries during his illustrious career. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the announcement, lauding Ashwin as "a name synonymous with mastery, wizardry, brilliance, and innovation." BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla praised Ashwin's immense contribution to world cricket. Indian captain Rohit Sharma stated that the team stands by Ashwin's personal decision. The retirement marks the end of a significant era in Indian cricket during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.
