World's Largest Hualong One Reactor Begins Operations at Zhangzhou Nuclear Plant
Jan 2, 2025, 07:30 AM
The first power generation unit of the Zhangzhou nuclear power project in Fujian Province, China, officially began commercial operations on January 1, 2025, following a successful 168-hour full-power demonstration run. The Zhangzhou project, the world's largest Hualong One nuclear power base, is part of China's efforts to expand its nuclear energy capacity using the domestically developed Hualong One, a third-generation reactor that meets global safety standards. The project, designed to include six Hualong One units, represents a significant step in China's energy strategy to improve its energy mix and achieve its dual carbon targets. This milestone also marks major progress in the batch construction of the Hualong One reactor. Each Hualong One unit can generate over 10 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, equivalent to reducing 3.12 million tonnes of coal consumption and 8.16 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
