Waymo Launches 24/7 Driverless Robotaxi Service Across 80 Square Miles in Los Angeles
Nov 12, 2024, 06:54 PM
Waymo, Alphabet's autonomous vehicle company, has opened its driverless robotaxi service to the public in Los Angeles County, marking its largest expansion yet. Starting Tuesday, anyone can use the Waymo One app to hail a self-driving ride within an 80-square-mile area that spans from downtown LA to Santa Monica. The service operates 24/7 with fully electric vehicles, allowing passengers to request rides without needing an invitation or being on a waitlist, which previously had over 300,000 people. The vehicles operate without drivers, and the expansion makes Los Angeles the largest city where Waymo offers its autonomous ride-hailing service. Currently, the service is limited to surface streets and does not include freeway driving.
