Walmart, World's Largest Retailer, Ends DEI Initiatives Amid Conservative Pressure
Nov 26, 2024, 03:48 AM
Walmart Inc., the world's largest retailer and the nation's largest private employer, is rolling back its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies amid pressure from conservative activists, including Robby Starbuck. The company will wind down its $100 million Center for Racial Equity by June 2025 and discontinue the use of the term DEI. Walmart is also removing certain LGBTQ-themed merchandise from its website, reviewing funding for Pride events, and banning the term 'Latinx' from communications. Additionally, the retailer is ending programs that provided assistance to suppliers that are 51% owned by women, minorities, veterans, or members of the LGBTQ community. Walmart joins other major corporations such as Ford Motor Co., Toyota Motor Corp., John Deere, Starbucks Corp., and Boeing Co., which have also begun scaling back or reorganizing their DEI efforts in response to similar pressures. The rollback reflects a broader trend among U.S. firms reevaluating their diversity initiatives amid political and consumer backlash.
