Vizhinjam Port Welcomes San Fernando, Marks India's Entry into Global Maritime Logistics Under Adani Group
Jul 12, 2024, 03:38 AM
Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala, India, has welcomed its first semi-automated container vessel, the San Fernando, from Maersk. The port, developed under a public-private partnership model led by the Adani Group, began construction in 2015. The San Fernando, an 800-meter berth vessel with a capacity of 8,000-9,000 TEU, will handle 2,000 containers and rearrange 400 more. The arrival of the San Fernando, which received a water salute, marks a significant milestone, positioning Vizhinjam as a key player in global maritime logistics. The vessel arrived from Xiamen, China. The event was attended by key officials, including Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Union Ports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and Karan Adani, CEO of Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd. Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, hailed the day as historic, emphasizing India's entry into global transshipment. The port's strategic location near Kovalam Beach and its advanced technological capabilities are expected to reshape India's maritime landscape. The development is part of the Sagarmala initiative, which includes 55 projects worth more than Rs. 10,000 crore.
