Bird Flu Kills 47 Tigers, 3 Lions, and a Panther in Vietnam's Dong Nai Zoos
Oct 3, 2024, 08:06 AM
Dozens of captive tigers and lions have died in southern Vietnam over the past month, with tests confirming the presence of bird flu (H5N1) in the animals, according to the Vietnamese health ministry and state media reports. The fatalities include 47 tigers, three lions, and a panther across zoos in Dong Nai province. Authorities reported that two samples from the deceased tigers tested positive for the influenza A/H5N1 virus. The tigers were fed chicken meat, which may have been the source of the infection. All 30 people who had contact with the dead tigers are currently in good health, with no respiratory infections reported.
