Russian state media holding company VGTRK has been subjected to an unprecedented hacker attack on Monday, October 7, that disrupted online broadcasting and internal services of over 20 broadcasters, including Rossiya-1, Rossiya-24, Kultura, and Mayak. Reports indicate that all data on servers, including backups, were deleted, and employees reported that even internet and telephony services within VGTRK were down. Recovery is expected to be prolonged. The Kremlin acknowledged the attack, which coincided with President Vladimir Putin's birthday. An official in Kyiv claimed that Ukrainian hackers were responsible for the cyberattack.
