Vanderbilt Beats Auburn 17-7; Pavia's Third Win Over Freeze Secures Bowl Eligibility
Nov 2, 2024, 08:09 PM
On November 2, Vanderbilt University defeated Auburn University 17-7 at Jordan-Hare Stadium, securing its first-ever win at Auburn and becoming bowl-eligible for the first time since 2018. Led by quarterback Diego Pavia, who improved his personal record against Auburn's head coach Hugh Freeze to 3-0, Vanderbilt improved to a 6-3 record and achieved victories over both Alabama and Auburn in the same season for the first time since 1955. Pavia had previously defeated Freeze's teams while at New Mexico State University, with a 49-14 win over Liberty in 2022 and a 31-10 win over Auburn in 2023. Despite being outgained in total yards 327 to 227—exactly a 100-yard difference—Vanderbilt capitalized on key plays to secure the win. Auburn's head coach Hugh Freeze expressed disappointment, stating, "Extremely disappointed again. It's been too often a story for us and our fans. Just very disappointed. Thought our defense played their guts out and deserved to win."
