Pentagon Accounting Errors Lead to $8.2 Billion in Additional Aid to Ukraine, Including $6.2 Billion and $2 Billion
Jul 25, 2024, 11:08 PM
The Pentagon has identified accounting errors amounting to $8.2 billion in aid sent to Ukraine, according to a U.S. government report. Initially, the Department of Defense announced a $6.2 billion error, which was later followed by an additional $2 billion in miscalculations. These errors were primarily due to the use of replacement costs instead of original purchase prices and depreciation for defense items. As a result, the Defense Department can send further weapons and equipment worth these amounts to Ukraine. This discovery allows for an additional $2 billion in arms to be sent to Ukraine to cover the difference approved by U.S. President Joe Biden. Furthermore, Ukraine will receive $3.9 billion in financial aid through the World Bank, as announced by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. The errors were reported by Reuters.
