DHS Extends and Redesignates TPS for Haiti for 18 Months, Adding 309,000 Eligible Haitians
Jun 28, 2024, 11:10 PM
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the extension and redesignation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti for 18 months, from August 4, 2024, through February 3, 2026. This move, announced by Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, will allow approximately 214,000 Haitians currently receiving TPS benefits to continue their status. Additionally, an estimated 309,000 more Haitians, including those under the humanitarian program, may become newly eligible for TPS following the announcement. The TPS designation provides legal presence, work permits, and some taxpayer benefits to eligible Haitians. The extension also includes those who have been under TPS since 2010, following the devastating earthquake in Haiti.
