The survey, conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago, found that about 8 in 10 U.S. adults attribute a significant amount of responsibility to the killer. However, about 7 in 10 adults also believe that insurance company profits and denials of health care coverage played a moderate role in Thompson's death. The poll highlights a generational divide, with younger Americans, particularly those aged 18 to 29, more likely to view the murder as resulting from a confluence of factors, including insurance practices. Notably, 41% of this age group found the killing of Thompson to be acceptable or somewhat acceptable, according to Emerson Polling, a sentiment that decreases with age. The survey also indicates widespread awareness of the case, with about 7 in 10 respondents having heard or read about Thompson's death. UnitedHealthcare reported that it pays about 90% of medical claims when submitted, but did not specify the number of claims involved.
