Arizona Supreme Court Clears Prop 139 Abortion Rights Vote; 'Unborn Human Being' Term Allowed
Aug 21, 2024, 12:31 AM
The Arizona Supreme Court has ruled that state voter pamphlets can use the term 'unborn human being' to describe a fetus, a decision that aligns with Republican anti-abortion lawmakers. This ruling comes ahead of a November vote where Arizonans will decide whether to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution. U.S. Senator Mark Kelly hopes that voters will support this measure. The court also cleared the Arizona Abortion Access Act, known as Prop 139, for the November ballot after rejecting a challenge by AZ Right to Life. The challenge was based on claims that the 200-word summary used to collect signatures was misleading. The court determined that disputes over the initiative's effects should be addressed in a campaign rather than in court. The ruling was announced on August 16, 2024.
