Famine Declared in Sudan Amid Severe Food Shortages in Zamzam Camp, Darfur
Aug 1, 2024, 01:06 PM
Famine has been officially declared in Sudan, marking the first formal declaration of famine worldwide since 2017. The crisis is particularly severe in the Darfur region, where the Zamzam camp in North Darfur, home to over 500,000 people, is experiencing extreme food shortages. Experts have warned that 440,000 people in Darfur are on the brink of starvation, and in the next four months, two and a half million Sudanese could die of hunger-related causes. U.N. trucks filled with food are being prevented from crossing into Sudan, exacerbating the crisis.
