PM Keir Starmer Unveils 50-Point AI Plan to Make UK Global Leader, Aiming for £57 Billion Boost
Jan 13, 2025, 09:45 AM
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has unveiled a comprehensive 50-point plan to position Britain as a world leader in artificial intelligence, aiming to boost the economy by up to £57 billion a year. The government's AI Opportunities Action Plan seeks to "unleash AI" across the country to drive growth, create jobs, and enhance public services. Key initiatives include establishing "AI Growth Zones" to fast-track AI infrastructure, increasing the UK's data center capacity over 20-fold by 2030, and developing a National Data Library. The plan also involves creating a homegrown rival to OpenAI, investing in a new AI supercomputer, and encouraging more graduates to pursue technology-focused courses. Private tech firms have committed £14 billion to support the initiative. Emphasizing sovereign computing power, the government aims to make the UK the top destination for AI firms. Starmer stated, "Britain will be one of the great AI superpowers" and that the UK will "go our own way on AI regulation." The plan includes establishing an AI Safety Institute and leveraging AI to improve public services, such as freeing up time for doctors and teachers.
