Blinken Meets Erdogan at Ankara Airport to Discuss Syria and Turkey's Security Measures
Dec 12, 2024, 07:54 PM
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Ankara on Thursday evening and met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at Esenboga Airport. During their discussion, Erdogan emphasized Turkey's commitment to preserving Syria's territorial integrity, unity, and unitary structure. He stated that Turkey will take preventive measures for its national security against terrorist organizations such as PKK/PYD/YPG and Daesh in Syria. Erdogan highlighted that Turkey is the only NATO country to have fought Daesh in direct combat and will prevent the PKK and its affiliates from exploiting the situation. Blinken stressed the importance of all parties in Syria respecting human rights and protecting civilians, including minorities. They also discussed the urgent need for a Gaza cease-fire and a hostage deal that would increase humanitarian assistance to Palestinians. Both officials underscored the necessity for strong regional cooperation and support for a Syrian-led political transition to an accountable, inclusive government.
