Appeals Court Upholds $5 Million Sexual Abuse Judgment Against President-elect Trump, Rejects New Trial
Dec 30, 2024, 07:20 PM
A federal appeals court has upheld a $5 million judgment against President-elect Donald Trump for sexually abusing and defaming E. Jean Carroll, rejecting his request for a new trial. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit issued a 77-page per curiam opinion affirming the verdict, stating that Trump did not demonstrate any errors by the district court that would warrant a new trial. The judgment includes $2 million for sexual abuse and $3 million for defamation. The court rejected Trump's assertions that Judge Kaplan erred in admitting testimony from other women and the Access Hollywood tape. A Trump spokesperson indicated that he will continue to appeal the decision. As a result, Trump remains responsible for paying Carroll $5 million in damages stemming from the 1996 incident in a Manhattan department store dressing room.
