Trump Meets TikTok CEO, Hints at Reversing January Ban
Dec 16, 2024, 08:57 PM
President-elect Donald Trump indicated he may reconsider the impending ban on TikTok in the United States, expressing a "warm spot in my heart for TikTok" during a press conference on Monday. Trump credited the Chinese-owned video-sharing app with helping him win young voters by a margin of 34 points, saying "some say TikTok had something to do with that." The ban, set to take effect on January 19, 2025, was initiated over national security concerns due to TikTok's Chinese ownership. "We'll take a look at TikTok," Trump said when asked about possibly stopping the ban. Later that day, Trump met with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, signaling openness to reversing his previous hard-line stance from 2020 when he was president. TikTok has also petitioned the Supreme Court to temporarily block the ban.
