President-elect Trump’s Return With GOP Senate Majority Could Allow Him to Appoint Two More Justices
Nov 7, 2024, 02:44 PM
President-elect Donald Trump is returning to the White House with a Republican Senate majority. This scenario, anticipated by GOP allies, could allow Trump to appoint more Supreme Court justices, potentially giving him the opportunity to name more than half of the entire Supreme Court by the end of his term. Currently, Trump has already appointed three justices, and he may have the chance to appoint two more. The focus now turns to older Supreme Court justices, with some liberals calling for Justice Sonia Sotomayor to retire before Trump's return. However, Democrats would struggle to confirm a replacement. With no filibuster for confirming judges, Trump will have free rein to appoint numerous lifetime federal judges. There is speculation on whether Justices Alito or Thomas will resign, although this seems unlikely, according to Justin Jouvenal and Tobi Raji.
