Texans' Azeez Al-Shaair's Suspension Upheld After Hit Ends Trevor Lawrence's Season
Dec 4, 2024, 09:02 PM
Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair has been suspended for three games without pay by the NFL following a late and illegal hit on Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence during Sunday's game. The hit resulted in Lawrence suffering a concussion and being placed on injured reserve; he is expected to undergo shoulder surgery, likely ending his season. The suspension was issued by NFL Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan, citing repeated violations of player safety rules by Al-Shaair. Texans General Manager Nick Caserio criticized the NFL's decision and the portrayal of Al-Shaair, calling the league's statement unfair and highlighting inconsistencies in rulings. Texans coach DeMeco Ryans defended Al-Shaair, suggesting that quarterbacks need to take better care of themselves, while Jaguars coach Doug Pederson defended his team's reaction to the hit. Al-Shaair appealed the suspension, but it was upheld after a hearing with Appeals Officer Ramon Foster. As a result, Al-Shaair will miss games against the Dolphins, Chiefs, and Ravens, forfeiting $338,235 in game checks, and will be eligible to return in Week 18 against the Titans. In response to Lawrence's injury, the Jaguars signed Super Bowl-winning quarterback John Wolford to provide depth at the position.
