Tokyo Electric Suspends Fukushima Fuel Removal Due to Technical Issue, Local Media Reports
Sep 17, 2024, 10:32 AM
Japanese utility Tokyo Electric has suspended operations to remove melted radioactive fuel at the bottom of one of the wrecked Fukushima reactors due to a technical issue, according to local media. The suspension comes only days after the removal process began, following years of preparation. The removal of highly radioactive fuel debris is a critical step in the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, which was severely damaged by a tsunami in 2011.
