England's Tuition Fees to Rise to £9,535 in 2025, First Increase in Eight Years
Nov 4, 2024, 01:53 PM
The Labour government, led by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, is set to announce an increase in university tuition fees in England for the first time in eight years. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson is expected to address Parliament this afternoon, revealing plans to raise tuition fees in line with Retail Price Index (RPI) inflation from September 2025. The fees, which have been capped at £9,250 since 2017, will increase to approximately £9,535. The decision comes amid concerns over the financial health of universities, with institutions reporting losses of around £4,000 per domestic student and warning they are "on the brink." Maintenance loans for poorer students will also rise, from £10,227 to £10,544, to help cover increased living costs. Universities have been advocating for the fee increase to restore their financial stability.
